7 Ways to Maximize Save-On More Rewards
Last updated on April 9th, 2024
Save-On-Foods is our go-to grocery store. One of our favorite things about Save-On is their rewards program. We would use the coupons for the bonus points, yet one day as we were walking out of the store I got frustrated that we had missed our bonus points by only a mere $5, I decided that I had to make a change. Over the course of the next few weeks I made a little change that made a huge difference in how we racked up the points.
The base rate to earn points is 1 point per $1 spent. It would take forever for the points to add up to anything worthwhile. By using the tips in this post my wife & I managed to earn over 100,000 points in a year! We only spend an average of $150 per week at Save-On. Today, I would like to share with you seven ways to maximize the Save-On-More Rewards program.
Install the Save-On-Foods App
This is where is all starts. Yes, you can be old school and sign up for a Save-On-More rewards card. A card is needed in order to get the sale prices in the store. I used to carry the one on my key chain, but I would have to replace it at least once per year! When I heard about the app for the phone, I put it on my phone. Now, I never leave home without my Save-On card and I don’t have to get a new one every year. The app has been upgraded several times, and each time it has gotten better! At the checkout, your card can even be scanned from the app on your phone.
Load the Weekly VIP Offers
You don’t have to load all the offers, only the ones that interest you. After you have loaded the offers, have your Save-On card is scanned at the check-out, and the offers are automatically applied. The points coupon is a single use for the week, so plan accordingly.
There is usually an offer for bonus points, this is where you really earn the points! The offers are different every week with some weeks being better than other weeks. The offers for food items are generally on sale already, and the VIP offers lower the price even further! Pay attention to the product size and limits on the offers.
Look for Bonus Point Products
Often there are items in the store that have bonus points with them. They are something like “Buy 2; Get 500 Points”. It’s even better if the product is on sale at the same time.
If you only buy one of those products, you get half of the points, so you don’t have to get two in order to get the deal! This is an awesome deal if it is an item that we would like to stock up on for our 1-Up System.
Enter Contests
Save-On periodically has contests where you can earn bonus points. Sometimes, you can enter drawings for prizes (points included) when you buy certain products. I have seen them with their “Wheel of Fortune” where you can spin once for every $100 Spent. They have also given away free groceries for a year and 1 Million points!
The chances of winning a big prize is low. I know that. Why not enter every time we are able to, because we must be in the game in order to have a chance to win. As of the writing of this post, I have not won any big prizes from Save-On.
Redeem Points for Free Food
There are offers that allow us to spend our points for free food. Pay attention to the point per dollar amount. We limit our point redemption to deals where we get a value over $1 per 1,000 points. The best food items that I have found are the turkeys and hams at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Other items that points can be redeemed for are milk and butter. Personally, we save our rewards points for travel, rather than redeeming for food. If money is really tight, redeeming for food can help lower your food bill, or allow you to get more food for the dollar.
Use a Calculator
The calculator on my phone allows me to bring my point earning to the next level. I add up everything in the store as I (or my wife) put the items in the cart. Usually the VIP points coupon is for each $50, $75 or $100 spent, so I aim for those increments.
I find that when I use a calculator in a store I am more aware of how much I am spending. It puts me in control of our spending.
Always Shop with A List
I always shop with a list. This will allow us to get all the items that we need and, if I need to spend a few more dollars to get to the cut-off I can get something that is needed, not candy at the check-out! This plan of attack will work with other programs as well. We used them with Air Miles when there was a Safeway in town. With I little bit of study and planning Rewards programs can be maximized without much extra effort. Happy shopping!!
Scan Your Card at Checkout
The other day, my Save-On app would not load the Save-On More card bar code. The cashier said she was not allowed to enter my card number; just my phone number. That brought up my account, but there is a security issue – VIP coupons cannot be accessed when the phone number is entered! In order to get your VIP coupons, you have to have your card or app bar code scanned. I was able to get the points, so it all worked out alright. Make sure that you have a scanable bar code before getting to the checkout.
