How to Get More Free Tim Horton’s
Last updated on April 6th, 2024
You know you’re in Canada when you tell someone that you are going to Tim’s and they don’t ask you, “Tim who?” According to their website, 80% of Canadians visit a Tim Horton’s at least once per month!
If Canadians love Tim Horton’s so much why should I write a post about them? Getting free Tim Horton’s food and drinks makes them even better! Free? Yes! The Tim’s app allows users to save money and earn points on their purchases. There are lots of things you can do with your Tim’s account.
I really enjoy saving money and earning rewards while doing ordinary things. I previously wrote about Maximizing Save-On More Rewards. This post is about getting the most out of our visits to Tim Horton’s. The first thing you need to do is…
Get the Tim’s App
The Tim’s app is the most convenient way to get the most out of your Tim Horton’s experience. You can download it from your app store for both Android and iPhone.
Once you have the app, you can set up an account (or log into your existing account). Now that you have the app and an account, you can place mobile orders. They have weekly offers for discounts on food and beverages. Best of all you can earn points that you can use towards free food and drinks!
Tim’s “Roll Up The Rim” has changed since the pandemic. We used to actually roll up the rim of our coffee cups to see what we won. Now, the whole promotion is played on the app. The prizes run from points to free food and drinks to thousand dollar plus items.
Mobile Ordering
With the app (also on their website) you can place a mobile order. Choose the location and how you would like to pick us your order. When you get to the restaurant you can pick up your order at the designated spot at the counter. If you choose to pick up in drive-thru, just tell them you have a mobile order and your name.
The app will give you the discount for donuts or Tim Bits when you pick the number needed for the discount. You can also customize your items.
New on October 19th, Tim’s added a new feature! You can turn on “Scan to Pay” on the app. When you scan your QR code in store to get the deal and the points, you can also instantly pay at the same time. It uses the same card that you have saved for mobile orders.
One of the downfalls of mobile ordering is if you want to order something at the wrong time of day (or night!). At 4:00 AM coffee is the only thing available on mobile order. Inside the store you can order what you want, but not on the app. Similarly, lunch items are not available during breakfast.
Load Your Offers
In order to use an offer, you must activate that offer. Most offers are single use. There are some that are good all week or for multiple uses.
It is important to pay attention to the offer details. Some offers will specify what type of drink or size of drink. If the deal is for a breakfast sandwich and a tea, you cannot substitute a coffee.
Earning Points
We earn 10 points per dollar spent before taxes and after discounts. Just remember to scan your card if you don’t place a mobile order. Occasionally there is an offer for earning bonus points.
Before you try to get sneaky, you can only place an order every 30 minutes. For couples, each person should have their own Tim Horton’s account. That way both can earn points and get deals. By ordering separately, each person can order a deal on their app and they each earn points.
Redeeming Points
Ah, this is the fun part! Just remember to use your points or you will lose them. Points expire in 12 months from when they were earned. This gives us plenty of time to get free stuff – even if you are not a regular customer at Tim Horton’s.
There are different reward levels – Beverages, baked goods, breakfast, and Lunch and Dinner. You can see what is available on the app. To make sure that you don’t accidentally use your points, switch back to “bank my points” after you redeem them. Yes, I’ve accidentally used points before I wanted to!
We can only redeem 1 food or drink deal per order. I like the way Tim’s has their app and rewards program set up. It’s a great way to rewards their customers. Redeeming points for coffee gives you the most value – even though it is the smallest amount.
Tim Horton’s Gift Cards
Tim Horton’s gift cards are as good as cash, well, at least at Tim’s! You can easily add a gift card to you Tim’s account. Simply go into you account, Payment Methods, Manage Tim Card, then tap on “Transfer balance from another Tim Card.” Enter the card number and the PIN. Now, you don’t have to carry another card around!
Take It Up a Level
For those of you out there that want to get even more for your money, I have good news for you! Pay for your meal with a rewards credit card. You can even link a cash back app to your card and sometimes get a few cents from that as well.
For those who like to give, Tim’s likes to give as well. We can choose to round up your purchase to the next 10 cents to help with Tim’s Camp program.
